El-P, onetime leader of Def Jux and member of underground kings Company Flow, really knows his hip-hop history. His new return-to-form single "Drones Over BKLYN" mixes Kool G Rap bluesy piano, early Def Jam arena theatrics and a title that punts the once-prescient "Bombs Over Baghdad" into a new decade. What's particularly of interest here is how the beat and vocals are both expansive and comfortable, lacking the ultra-compression of radio-ready rap and allowing El-P to talk some 2025 smack.
