Usually, when we compare newer acts to rock legends, it comes with an extra word like "barroom" in front. Not so with The War On Drugs. "Come To The City" is all majestic, streaked organ tones, watery guitar rips, tangled samples and the voice of band leader Adam Granduciel, which somehow evokes Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen and Tom Petty in a legitimate, wholly unique way. The Philly act, like frequent collaborator Kurt Vile, scores another win for those of us who love our rock widescreen, ethereal and folky. The War On Drugs' Slave Ambient is out today (August 16) on Secretly Canadian.
