When I was growing up, The Clash were my dad, Rancid were my older brother and Fugazi were my pervert uncle, so to be honest, being able to play a guitar really, really well in a technical sense was never that important to me. Generally speaking, I'll take an idiot pretending to be a savant over a virtuoso every time, but Joel Stein from Howling Bells really, really knows how to play the guitar, and—more impressively—he's able to do this without making me think he's a wanker who never saw the sun or breasts at high school. "The Loudest Engine" is a creeping, sex-tense track that's clearly influenced by David Bowie, and it's one lit-up by Joel's solo towards the end. I hope to find more of the same on Howling Bells' new album Loudest Engine, out September 12 through Cooking Vinyl.
