Calgary songwriter and multimedia maven Chad VanGaalen really makes it count when he shows up. The mysterious and semi-reclusive artist has a recent album, Diaper Island, and "Peace On The Rise" leads the way with chunky, '90s-inflected guitar interplay. For someone so closely associated with the eclectic, folkier side of things, this one is more like Sonic Youth decided to get a bit more sun. Eventually, the guitar fades for an orchestral drone -- something to wash the palate in the midst of a patient effort. Diaper Island is available now on Sub Pop.
