Washed Out, the project of one Ernest Greene, could have been washed away in the temporary chillwave of 2009. Instead, he upped the ante with improved songwriting, sonics and production on his Sub Pop debut Within And Without. "Amor Fati" sticks to the script. It's a hazy kaleidoscopic jam with muted, sensual textures and reverberated ecstasy in Greene's voice, but what shines through is an understanding of real dance music. No, this isn't another case where an act mimics late-'80s production for fashion. Washed Out is an artist with a genuine love of form and has the ability to execute in a way that fulfills his name's promise.
