From producing for his erstwhile group Little Brother, North Carolina native 9th Wonder went on to work with artists as diverse as Jay-Z, David Banner and Mary J. Blige. But the boom-bap specialist has not forgotten his roots: He is now producing for North Carolina MC Rapsody. On her most recent mixtape, Thank H.E.R. Now, Rapsody's nasally voice and confident flow sear into crinkled, stylish beats by 9th Wonder and others, such as Nottz and Khrysis, who stay faithful to the main architect's soulful blueprint. This sound is suitably evident on "Black Diamonds," where Rapsody and the Wu-legend Raekwon effortlessly glide over a twinkling, choppy soul loop.
