Deerhoof is the rare rock act that totally owns its sound, batting competitors and biters away since the mid-'90s and pressing into weirder territories with each move. Yet underneath all the experimentation and rapid left-hand turns, it's those jerky, angular guitars and ADD drums that defines the band, and that must be why the group was tapped for this new remix of Royal Bangs' excellent math-rock number "TV Tree." Here, a noise-shrouded introduction sounds as if the Deerhoof put the original track into a George Foreman Grill before tearing in, but soon there's the band we've come to know, with all its fleeting compositional tics working magic over Royal Bangs. It's a perfect fit for the original's singer, Ryan Schaefer, to do his thing. Royal Bangs' new album Flux Outside is available now from Glassnote Records.
