A while back, we offered instrumental hip-hop group 3:33's remix of MF DOOM's "Vomit." Now the still unidentifiable group are stepping up from EPs and remix work to release a full-length album, The First Thousand Days, out this month on Parallel Thought. The minimally-titled opening track "A1" is an ideal example of 3:33's sound: An elemental setup of heavy, fill-stuffed drum breaks; seamless, aqueous drapes of string-sounding keyboards; and infrequent filligrees of various sound effects. Like early DJ Shadow, 3:33 is making hip-hop that is as inscrutable as abstract expressionism and as raw as an early Steinski tape, for b-boys and berets alike.
