Meat and potatoes underground hip-hop can be satisfying, but when producers provide MCs with more exploratory backdrops, the dish goes gourmet. On "Never Don't Grow," Los Angeles-based trio Late Bloomers (producer/MC Ahh:Zel, MC Nonstop, and DJ/producer Really Nathan) drape their fluid, rich wordplay in glimmering, spacy synths and jittery, click-clacking digital drums. Sounding like SA-RA Creative Partners reworking A Tribe Called Quest's The Love Movement, "Never Don't Grow" is a musical history lesson, absorbing the sounds of the past while attempting to place them somewhere in the future. Late Bloomers debut EP, Three Shade Brown, is out now on Tres.
