With the stark, bare-bones pop sensibility that emerged in the last decade with bands like Spoon and a keen sense of '80s dynamics, Gardens & Villa seems like its been at it for years on the new "Star Fire Power." This is ambitious music with a flattened disco beat and double-time bass, smeared synthesizers and sharp hooks that sound more British than Pacific Coast. It takes a dedication to craft to sound this happy and sad at the same time. Gardens & Villa, hailing from Santa Barbara, seems to have found that balance on its upcoming Secretly Canadian debut set for July 5.
