DOWNLOAD: Serengeti - Ha-Ha

In 2008, Chicago rapper Serengeti released Dennehy (Lights, Camera, Action!), a musically deep, lyrically funny, and thematically rich debut full of various characters who are all significant touchstones of Chicago culture. For his next album, Family And Friends, out July 19th on Anticon, the MC adheres to his talent for drawing vivid character portrayals and charismatic rhymes featuring inventive pronunciation and tempos. The album is produced by just two musicians: Yoni Wolf, otherwise known as WHY?, and Owen Ashworth, presently known as Advance Base, formerly known as Casiotone For The Painfully Alone. The former provides the beat for "Ha-Ha," a minimal, lurching track featuring Serengeti's bemused observations about, ostensibly, meeting a woman who turns him from an MC into a carpenter/interior decorator. Quirky, yes, but also focused, and odd enough to keep revisiting, and after a few times, you realize you're just listening to it over and over again.
