Yes, you are hearing correctly: That's a Fugazi sample on the beat. Producer EMYND transforms Repeater + 3 Songs track "Blueprint" into a one-third melancholy, one-third galvanizing, and one-third crunk beat that somehow makes perfect logical sense in a hip-hop context. The song would be in danger of being nothing more than a gimmick if it weren't for the terrific performance by North Carolina MC Stranger Day, who flows smoothly through the beat when he's not stopping mid-verse, shifting the tempo of his recitation in either direction, or altering his syncopation. While that may sound complex, the track is totally accessible, all the more incredible considering the atonal noise of the beat's source and the technical showmanship of the MC. "Not Playin'" is part of Stranger Day's new EP, Barstool Bounce, which is mostly produced by EMYND (along with DJA and Mike Golden) and is out soon.
