“Hotel,” a dirge of a song by Bodi Bill, is a strange meeting point of musical theatre and electronic dance music, if you can even believe that paradox in terms. The muted trumpet at the beginning gives way to a blippy synth and words that toss us en media res of an encounter between a prostitute and a customer, ending with ambiguously violent results. It mines a lyrical narrative in a way that a lot of contemporary electronic artists don’t typically bother with: “A room is still a room, even if it smells funny/You speak in generous words but all I need is your money/the door to your apartment needs to be fixed honey.” Weird stuff, but in the best way possible.
