Can’t help but admit, we’ve always been suckers for Aaliyah, especially the post-Biggie, post-Tupac, forward-looking common ground jam (“east coast feel me,” “west coast feel me,” “dirty south feel me,” etc.), “Are You That Somebody.” This absolutely charming cover by Anni Rossi takes Timbaland’s already minimal production and distills it to nothing but a hook and barely there drum beat. Under most circumstances, covering Aaliyah is pretty futile; there’s just no going toe to toe with the woman. But Rossi, whose album Heavy Meadow is out today from 3 Syllables, manages to record a song that is both an endearing tribute and excellent showcase for her own unique style.
