DOWNLOAD: Liam Finn – The Struggle

Liam Finn, from New Zealand, has spent the last four years touring. It’s been three years since his last album, which has earned him a kind of cult following. That’s a shame because “The Struggle,” like the rest of Finn’s new album, Fomo, out June 21 from Yep Roc, is made for stadiums. His voice yelps and howls with a Gene Vincent, early rock & roll affectation, while the rest of the song is proggy and weird, creating an eerie dissonance within the performance. It sounds like it might collapse at any moment—and at one point, the song does, in fact, stop, the sound dropping completely as if pausing to catch its breath before continuing—but the whole idea, if you hadn’t guessed from the title, is overcoming chaos: “I have not got the patience,” Finn sings and he sounds triumphant.
