DOWNLOAD: Okkervil River – Wake And Be Fine

Posted by Michael Miller

Okkervil River’s “Wake And Be Fine,” off their forthcoming album I Am Very Far, is just about as heavy as the band has ever sounded in their prolific career. Piano keys sound like they are being punched, guitars like they are being beaten rather than strummed, and William Sheff’s voice functions as much as part of the rhythmic cacophony as anything else, cracking and accenting the beats like a percussion instrument (it’s telling that this is the band’s first album to be produced by Sheff). It’s the darkest Okkervil River has sounded too, despite the title’s misleading optimism, and that’s a refreshing change of pace from their more gentle, subdued tunes. The music before seemed to just barely contain itself within tension, but now, it is bursting at the seams with energy.
