For those of you who may have thought that "Time Machine" is the best track off of BIG K.R.I.T.'s recently released mix tape ReturnOf4Eva, and have yet to hear the album, will be amazed to discover how many tracks off the collection are on or above that level. On "King's Blues," K.R.I.T. drops a melancholy, mellow, and mud-thick beat full of dusty drum loops, heavily filtered guitar licks, late night sax bleats, and an Erykah Badu sample. As watery and woozy as the beat may be, K.R.I.T.'s weariness is what stands out, his seething unrest conveyed in the burden of "bills to pay" and "mouths to feed." A stoned jam about the burden of adult responsibility, "King's Blues" is yet another example of why ReturnOf4Eva is one of the best rap albums, mix tape or otherwise, of the year.
