Tyler, The Creator - Seven (James Pants Remix)

Odd Future spokesperson—and possibly the present day's most notorious enfant terrible—Tyler, The Creator's prominence has as much to do with his and his cohorts' radically discordant and unfriendly approach to hip-hop and its sound. So the natural approach to a remix of a Tyler, The Creator track is to adopt an equally radical route. James Pants does exactly that, slowing down Tyler's voice to a low, sluggish crawl, then draping it across a driving, cymbal-less drum beat. It's almost like a crunk Public Image Ltd., until Pants tosses in a gossamer synth patch and sax loop, and suddenly we're in Twin Peaks, where the introduction of cheese provides an odd opening of light in an otherwise haunted environment. Heavily fractured and experimental, Pants' remix of "Seven" nonetheless exemplifies why he and Tyler are at the vanguard of contemporary pop.
