In less than three minutes, San Francisco’s Young Prisms sculpt an anthem out of feedback and dissonance with “Breathless.” The song begins abruptly, with distant vocals drenched in reverb, crashing cymbals and guitars so distorted they bury the song’s hook in a sheet of noise. It all sounds like it could fall apart at any moment—and this supernova flash of a song ends so quickly it’s like the band just decided to stop playing—but that’s also part of the point. By the time it’s over, you don’t know what hit you and you can’t help but feel out of breath.
