Hamburg’s Digitalism are like a graduate survey course in electronic dance music. “2 Hearts,” case in point, has the nearly robotic technical perfection of Daft Punk, the clock-tick rhythm of Detroit techno, LCD Soundsystem’s mixture of rock band and dance, and it doesn’t hurt that the vocals have the kind of cold but affecting non-singing style of Kraftwerk. The band is more than just the sum of their influences, though, partly because they aren’t obvious, and never give too much away too soon. “These two hearts won’t make it last,” they sing in the song’s chorus, but the real point of the sentiment is deferred until the very end: “But it’s okay ‘cause I will stay with you.” And like that, it’s over.
