The Bee Gees—the last taboo? I guess bands like Scissor Sisters and MGMT would have something to say about that, but it is surprising to hear Dayve 'Memory Tapes' Hawk return with something so Brothers Gibb. The soft, 70s West Coast pop spaces of "Today Is Our Life" flutter in and out of sunburnt inertia, Hawk's voice lost in slacker harmonies one second before suddenly disappearing off along fret-running flights of (relative) abandon. His new album Player Piano—conceived, apparently, as a "Motown suicide note"—also claims to harbour Aphex Twin, The Kinks and doo-wop as influences. Sounds like it's gonna be one weird record—find it out from July 4, through Something In Construction in Europe and Carpark in the US.
