One of the great things about all-instrumental hip-hop albums is that they leave the opportunity open for an entirely new album wherein MCs rap over the beats. On "The Times," D.C. area rapper Oddisee (pictured above) goes in on the instrumental track "Tao Te Ching," off of Apollo Brown's recently released instrumental album, Clouds. With barely a breath to interrupt his indefatigable flow, Oddisee raps over a mellow, liquefied beat featuring dropping chains as percussion, boiling bass, and slow, bombastic horns. While somewhat of a melancholy track, the smoothness of the arrangement and Oddisee's voice create a soothing mixture of reflection and relaxation, enough to calm you down but sharp enough to keep you awake.
