I've been partial to YACHT for a while, long an evangelist to Jona Bechtolt's indie rock Timbaland output since he linked up Khaela Maricich, turning her solo outfit The Blow into a duo for a few years. Now, with Claire L. Evans (and collaborator Bobby Birdman), YACHT is dreaming up paradisiacal land of electronic wonder. Sure, "Dystopia" is clearly tapping into the idea of totalitarian negative space—the two singing about a mangled every day life like a futuristic Phil Ochs anthem—but creativity is what helps survival, right? Right! And that's why there's still sounds of triumph throughout the track. It all comes full circle, as it will appear on their upcoming album titled Shangri-La. It's out June 21 from our friends at DFA.
