If it hasn't been made apparent yet, I am a skeptic, which means I meet super groups not with instant idolatry but outright fear. When you take former members of Texas Is The Reason, Thursday, Garrison and Milhouse, bands that have all seen their genres change significantly since their beginnings (or breakups), that fear skyrockets. So boy was I pleasantly surprised when I heard Seriously, the debut album from I Hate Our Freedom out on Mightier Than Sword. It's good. "Sober Sunday" is the lightest fair on the release, which is furnished with punk riffs and anchored skillfully on drums in Tucker Rule's practiced hands. The production is almost too clean, and you get the feeling they wrote itching to play live (always a good sign), an opportunity NYC will get on Friday when the band opens for scene stalwarts (and early favorite) Samiam at Santos.
