On March 1st, Detroit hip-hop producer Apollo Brown will release Clouds, a 27-track album of rapidly morphing instrumentals. If, regardless of how limited that description is, that sounds a lot like J Dilla's Donuts, then keep in mind that Clouds, while never sticking to the same tack for too long, also flashes different surfaces than Dilla or most other underground hip-hop beatmakers. Forgoing the gritty for the gossamer, the dirty for the dreamy, and the sweet for the somber, Brown's music is smoother and perhaps more contemplative than your average hip-hop beat.
