Considering what's been released so far, most of the anticipation for James Pants' new album is based on wondering just what the thing will sound like. The first track premiered on RCRD LBL, "Darlin'," had the throbbing pitter-patter of '70s post-punk band Suicide laced with doo-wop vocals. Now there's "Alone," which has sophisti-pop saxophones; a rhythm section that's straight out of Public Image Ltd.'s post-punk masterpiece Metal Box; incomprehensible, distorted vocals that echo Mark Stewart's in his late '70s art-punk project The Pop Group; and even a chiming, jazzy vibraphone in the distance. Pants' music imparts a record geek's knowledge, but also a canny sense of how to mix-and-match his references. So what's the special blend of his forthcoming full-length? We'll have to find out April 19th, when his self-titled album is released on Stones Throw.
