Full disclosure: Black City was my favorite album of 2010. "Little People" has this David Bowie-Iggy Pop-Giorgio Mororoder quality to it that is particularly special because it isn't just a carbon copy of iconography, it's celebratory reinvention—making a hat tip sound like something brand new. The waves it travels in nine minutes are part of the reason Matthew Dear's album sits atop my list and turning it into something new seems strange to me. But Germany's Sascha Dive has worked his skills of master hypnotist on this dub rework into something I can get down with. He's stripped it of its Let's Dance-ness by smashing the vocals and guitars into pieces and sprinkling them back onto a warped beat like glitter strewn messily over glue—the construction may be asymmetrical, but it still sparkles. Dear does dark and mysterious well, so Dive's spin on his work sits nicely as the next addition to his catalogue.
