After I told our Operations Manger, Omar McFarlane, that we'd have some Mogwai up on the site, we both nerded out about spending a few years of lives listening almost exclusively to the Glasgow band. We both realized that we had a pretty difficult time defining their post-rock to people who wouldn't accept we weren't talking about the creatures from Gremlins. Nope, it was something like rock, slightly mellow with no lyrics. Without the lyrics, Omar said, he can glean whatever he emotions he wants from the song. It gives them the range to have ameliorative power for whatever you're going through. The thing that makes "San Pedro" stand out from a lot of their catalogue is that it's their version of mosh music—but you might sit still for this one and absorb the intricacies. Mogwai's new album Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will (greatest album title ever) is out February 15 on Sub Pop.
