When DJ Premier collaborated with KRS-One in 1995, they gave us "Rappaz R. N. Dainja," "MCs Act Like They Don't Know," and "Wannabemceez." In other words: Songs you should own. Now add "5%" to that catalog, where KRS' frog-throated, gruff voice attacks Premier's ferocious and fractured beat. KRS isn't quite as lively a rapper as he used to be, but his slower flow sounds better as he ages. And Premier is in fine form here, a sliver of rising strings occasionally peeking out of a minimal yet hard-hitting beat. Add a verse from Brand Nubian's Grand Puba and you have a '90s throwback that sounds very appropriate for falling temperatures. DJ Premier and KRS-One will be dropping a full-length album in 2011; and you can nab Premier's Year Round Records: Get Used To Us, which also boasts this song in its track list, and is out now.
