The Pipettes’ kisses were never wasted on me. Their judiciously plotted combo of pretty chicks with pipes + terrific outfits and backing band = punchy Britpop you could blare while cooking a roast, texting something snotty, or driving a soft-top Mustang. It was just so damn celebratory, putting the (oft-dismissed) importance of girls rocking hard because they were girls, not in spite of that fact, front and center. Those power chords and power ideals have been given an intergalactic refreshment with “Thank You”—a soft, seemingly U2-inspired pop ballad where boys are no longer playthings but equals deserving of gratitude.
