DOWNLOAD: Elliott Smith - Thirteen

Elliott Smith was no slouch when it came to crafting tender and afflicted music. His indubitable pain was evident in his early work through his method of layering multiple vocal tracks, using the technique because he was self-conscious about his very soothing voice. When he killed himself in late 2003, it was a tragedy to long-time fans, who began following him since his Kill Rock Stars days, as well as to people who discovered him through his large contribution to the Good Will Hunting soundtrack. Last week, KRS dropped a primer of his standout body of work, An Introduction To... Elliott Smith. From that is this quiet, acoustic cover of "Thirteen" by 1970s Memphis majors, Big Star. Their sound relied heavily on a Beatles influence, but Smith turned the tune into a softer, chill-you-to-the-bone type heart twister.
