Like all the best punk bands, they only existed a couple of years, but when punk rock finally does that thing in its head where it watches its life flash back just before it dies, X-ray Spex will be there shining in the highlight reel. In my mind—i.e. one that was made in the mid-Eighties, after punk's initial and best burst—to all intents and purposes X-ray Spex are their singer Poly Styrene: her screams duetting with those from manic sax pipe. She got the old band back together for a one-off show in London last year, and the bug bit back so hard she's about to resurrect a solo career that effectively ended over 25 years ago. "Black Christmas" won't appear on her new album Generation Indigo, but its antagonistically anti-seasonal reggae bomp will arrive in time for the turkey, out December 20 through Year Zero.
