The songs Freddy Ruppert writes as Former Ghosts are generally quite lonely places to be, so it must be heartening for him when one of his friends turns up to try to push a verse or two through the fuzz. Relatively speaking, "Winter's Year"—lit up by flaring, fluorescent synths—is a carnival compared to the tracks on first album Fleurs, but a guest vocal from Yasmine Kittles promptly restores a sense of hopeless fucking despair to proceedings. I guess there's a reason she called her own band Tearist. Made a foursome by Kittles (Xiu Xiu's Jamie Stewart and Nika 'Zola Jesus' Danilova the other members), Former Ghosts' new album New Love arrives November 9 through Upset The Rhythm.
