White Sea is in the business of haunting pop music, as evidenced by her remix of "The Shallow End" by Seven Saturdays. "Mountaineer" is all teen dreaming and coming from White Sea, bka Morgan Kibby of M83—a band that has been called a "John Hughes hangover"—it makes the most sense. It's the kind of song that pops up in your favorite comedy about adolescence when the jock realizes that he is actually in love with the art class savant and doesn't care what how his lacrosse buddies feel about it. Which is to say, it's racked with vocal crescendos and homecoming drums—a breathy beauty. Her EP, This Frontier, is out October 5.
