DOWNLOAD: De Staat - Habibi

Dutchmen De Staat (which translates to "The Repulic" in English and was taken from their Dutch brethren, composer Louis Andriessen) have a sound that goes back to the rock 'n roll of the '60s, but with an added looming darkness. When you listen closely to their first single "Habibi" the lyrics are a bit out of the ordinary—a repeated verse about finding abandoned puppies on the street, but feeling conflicted about your own emotional state to know what to do about it. But "habibi" means "my beloved," so it must be pretty serious. And if muted, nasty guitar riffs are proof of severity, then they're definitely found here and all throughout their EP, Here's De Staat. It drops out stateside on Cool Green September 28.
