DOWNLOAD: The Mahotella Queens - Wozani Mahipi

Strut's Next Stop Soweto series is shaping up to be, at the very least, one of the year's best archival projects, an essential history of South Africa's rich underground township music scene of the sixties and seventies. The just-released second volume covers psych-leaning organ-soul groups that were pulling influence from Westerners like Hendrix, the Beatles, and Booker T and the M.G.'s, a cross-cultural connection that deserves more explanation than the few sentences we can devote to it here. So, preview one of the comp's highlights below–a brief, limbering tune from the not-completely-obscure Mahotella Queens whose title translates to "Come On, Hippies"–then go buy the whole thing here and study the extensive liner notes (remember those?). Volume three, which focuses on jazz, is on the way, too.
