SXSW RCRD OF THE DAY: Drive-By Truckers - Birthday Boy

As the current masters of turning modern Southern plight into barstool poetry, Drive-By Truckers know good stories and good characters. "Birthday Boy"'s isn't male and isn't celebrating–it's the call girl working those unspoken get-togethers, trying to make ends meet in a degrading, insufferable trade. The Truckers detail her story with sobering realness ("Working for the money like you got eight hands / Flat on your back under a mean old man / Just thinking happy thoughts and breathing deep"), and let it fly over a swathe of ringing, open highway guitars. It might not be pretty, but it is real.
The tenth Drive-By Truckers album, The Big To-Do, came out yesterday via ATO. They play Stubb's tomorrow (3/18) at 10:30PM, their only show down in Austin this week.
