The Magnetic Fields' 69 Love Songs is exactly what its title says it is: a gargantuan collection of riffs on pop's most universal theme. It is also, unquestionably, the most beloved Magnetic Fields record, so Merge's announcement–in time for Valentine's Day, no less!–that they would be reissuing the LP as a vinyl box set seemed like worthy canonization. "The Book Of Love" is one of the LP's ballad-y high points, main brain Stephin Merritt plucking away at his ukulele and baritoning through a rumination on love's accepted history. In the hands of most, that would be completely boring. Here, it's anything but.
