If you're tired of hearing people sample Afro- and Latin- jazz, then listen to The Souljazz Orchestra. The Ottawa ensemble have a new record coming out on Strut called Rising Sun that is a behemoth of virtuosic playing and micro-genre hybridizing. "Mamaya" has Afro-jazz's time signature (12/8, for the few non-nerds that are still reading) but entangles it in bubbling Guinean rhythms, vibraphone, and seemingly omnipresent hand drums. Proof that it's not really where you're from, but how you play.
