Montreal’s The Besnard Lakes are in the news recently. Not yet for the 2010 follow-up to their Polaris Prize-nominated The Besnard Lakes Are the Dark Horse, long-hailed as both uplifting and dispiriting. No, it’s because Mark Ruffalo called them after their chilling melodies cured his flu-fever, and he insisted they score his directorial debut about a DJ named Delicious who’s healing from mental demons. We have some notes on that script. But only praise for the band’s seductive brand of depression—it’s absolutely cinematic. Studying the dreamlike echoes, the dueling California-infused vocals, and screaming stadium guitars on the epic “And You Lied To Me” is an exercise in breaking expectations. The tune morphs every few chords, just as if we’re changing scenes.
Sounds like: The Arcade Fire, Sunset Rubdown
