DOWNLOAD: Shannon Stephens - In Summer In The Heat

All the better singers have some distinctive identifying vocal move. In the case of Shannon Stephens of Seattle (who played in a college band with Sufjan), it’s kind of an anti-move — the way she holds a note for just a couple of bars is low-key sublime, almost getting the same effect as a pause of silence. Her style (a bit like Julie Doiron, but just a bit) is right at home on “In Summer in the Heat,” in which hardly a thing happens, in the good way. The song’s on her new album The Breadwinner, go get it.
