In the past, Zach Smith would set aside one of his bands, say, Three Mile Pilot, to focus on one of the others, say, Pinback. But the versatile musician sometimes known as Armistead Burwell Smith IV (right, Zach it is) might be getting a little better at multitasking: The long-dormant Three Mile Pilot has glided back into sight, Pinback is planning a new album in 2010, and amid all that, Zach has finished Underslept, the five-years-in-the-making debut of his solo project Systems Officer. The album’s due in October, but you can refamiliarize yourself now with Smith’s moody, perfectly edged pop on the album’s first single, “Shape Shifter.”
