Every town has that "local band": You see them kicking around house parties and small clubs for a while, and without giving it much thought you start to define the local scene around them. They are yours, and you love them in part because they mean something only in your town. Then one day, suddenly, you notice your scruffy little band—say, the Shaky Hands of Portland, OR—edging toward something greater. And you realize that they’re still your band, they just mean something everywhere now, and you love them even more. “Allison and the Ancient Eyes” is a plain old great song from the Shaky Hands’ fourth album, Let It Die (due next month); it resembles late-period Velvet Underground if they didn’t care about looking cool. It’s also a total gift to anyone making a mixtape for a girl named Allison.
