WAND's humble and magnificent new record for Ecstatic Peace, Hard Knox, seems like so much more than what it is–a collection of demos. We say that because its as cohesive–if not more so–than most of the basement folk offerings we've heard this year. Because these sorts of records tend to have a few stories behind them, we asked the dude James Jackson Toth to write a few words on "Chrome" and placed them after the break for your perusal.

I started playing harmonica a few days before I recorded this. I'm practically Paul Butterfield now compared to this performance, but I dig the shakiness. I love how Jexie changes the harmonies throughout. I kinda thought this was the best song I ever wrote when it was finished. It was supposed to have another chorus at the end, but I hit a wrong chord and had to fade out the instruments prematurely. Now I can't imagine it ending any other way.
