When The Raconteurs project was first announced, we weren't all "Who is this Brendan Benson guy?" because we had jammed his The Alternative To Love album pretty hard that year and thought it a mighty fine, if lightly-rocking, slice of the Detroit diaspora. We did wonder what the hell dude was doing with the constantly brooding, borderline cray cray Jack White, and then realized that it could be a good thing, that maybe Jack would mellow out a bit with Brendan at his side. That didn't exactly happen (see the gun-toting, leather-clad Dead Weather), but at least Brendan brought home some bigger amps for "Don't Want To Talk", from his new solo album, My Old, Familiar Friend. There's still a Big Star-like bubblegum flavor to this, but the gain is noticeably thicker and the cymbal crashes more frequent. And with names like Gil Norton (he produced this album called Doolittle) and Dave Sardy (Oasis, LCD Soundsystem) attached, we're thinking this might be one of the year's high gloss pop-rock records worth getting into.

Sounds like: Big Star, Gentleman Jesse And His Men
