Madlib is one of those artists who defies RCRD LBL's 'Sounds Like' category. The prolific California-based producer blazed a trail with the legendary J Dilla during his companion's life time and since Dilla's death has continued to forge ahead into new sonic terrain, delivering hip-hop, soul, jazz and Latin records all bearing the Madlib stamp. Ever inventive and adventurous, "Lifetime (Lifeline)" is one of those cuts that's more familiar - taken from Madlib's Beat Konducta Vol 6 release, soul samples are cut and rewired, as percussive ephemera floats somewhere above that lax snare swing that's become his and Dilla's trademark. In a time of pretenders, Madlib has designs on genius - catch him, along with Stones Throw labelmate J Rocc and BBC 1Xtra DJ Benji B, at Fabric in London this Wednesday (May 13).
