The Dig (Opening for The Rakes) @ Bowery Ballroom, Monday, April 6th, 2009

A pleasant surprise on Monday night at Bowery? Wedged in between Sean Bones' reefer-reggae and The Rakes' rambunctious post-punk was New York-based The Dig. Theirs is a mixed breed of leaden psychedelic-tinged riffs and dirty alt-rock hooks. Distinctive traits: vocal duties shared by both guitarist and bassist, spiky beats (courtesy of ferocious kick-drum), and electrifying distortion that vibrates in your cranium long over the set is closed. It's hard to do justice with classifications but imagine the musical buddies of Darker My Love having listened to The Secret Machines and then a dose of Wolf Parade on repeat. Bottom line: they've got bold bravado and the musical tightness that's worth keeping an eye on.
