O+S (which we gather is pronounced "oh plus ess") is a new collaborative project between Orenda Fink, former half of Azure Ray, and Scalpelist, better known as Cedric LeMoyne, bassist for defunct Southern alt band Remy Zero. Longtime friends from their days growing up in Birmingham, the two formed the O+S project when Fink invited Scalpelist to work with her on a found-sound art project in her newly-adopted hometown of Omaha, writing songs around field recordings and samples Fink had been collecting during trips to Haiti. That initial collaboration spiraled into a full-length for Saddle Creek, where the two expansive tracks below originate. "We Do What We Want To" immediately recalls Azure Ray's heated sheets of lullaby melody, while "Permanent Scar" is more about Scalpelist's lightly distorted bass, a darker, dirgey foray into the taped-together avant-pop of the record. Certainly worth a taste if you've ever dabbled in their previous groups' work and a must for any fans of blissfully out-there pop.
