When I interviewed Rafter over a year ago and asked him to describe the music he plays, he said, "I want to make something that is good for people, that is healthy." Being the in-shape, dietarily careful music nerds that we are, we sympathize with dude's desire to get listeners up on the health tip. But unfortunately we don't have the know-how or wherewithal to do such a thing. Rafter does. He writes and records music for commercials to pay the bills, working out of his own well-stocked San Diego studio. When he's not doing that he's logging ideas and sounds for his own releases, which have been coming out on the regular through Asthmatic Kitty since 2007's Music For Total Chickens. The three songs below come from his most recent Sweaty Magic EP, all super-enjoyable chunks of zany studiophile pop, loaded with synths and noises that sound like pieces of playground equipment in orchestra. Catch him in Austin throughout this week. Maybe he'll go on a run with you to get rid of that hangover.
Sounds like: Passion Pit, Sufjan Stevens at a Chuck E. Cheese
