Once a city where people like Bowie and Iggy went to make thin, dark records of rock and roll weirdism, Berlin's not-so-recent status as electronic music's Mecca has drawn loads of travel-happy musicians in search of some divine groove inspiration. Brandon Bethancourt, b.k.a. Alaska In Winter, is one such pilgrim, a New Mexico native and Beirut collaborator (Zach Condon played on his debut album Dance Party In The Balkans) who moved to the German capital to work on his new record, Holiday. Not a huge surprise, then, that dude named a post-dawn comedown track with sullen organs and layered vocoders after the city, or that he roped in a remixer, in this case Los Angeles electro-pop artist Doctor Rosen Rosen, to turn it out even further. Both of these tracks adhere to the Stuart Price ethos of production: when in doubt, just put three major chords together, add reverb, some kicks, and shoot for the moon. It works out splendidly.
